I love how they're burning bibles, too. I could have a field day with this on Discuss Christianity at beliefnet.

I heard about that, it is so sad, how incredibly stupid people can be. And As I recently said, this behavior really causes concern. This mind set is very dangerous

Eh, well...yet one more installment in a long, sad history of same.

Very good point, Dave. I think you nailed it.

Truly inspired retort, Gorm.

It's easier for me to think about bookburning than Fred Phelps. He gives me the total willies.

What sad, sad people, so afraid of different ideas that they try to burn them. It's not enough to not read the book yourself and tell all your friends to not read it too, you have to try to prevent other people from reading it and forming their own opinion. Book challengers are the same type of people as book burners, to my way of thinking. It is all about trying to control ideas and what other people think. Watching the rise of the Evangelicals has been very sad. They don't know they are the Beast they fear so badly.

It wasn't Evangelicals who burned the Library of Alexandria or the Codices of the Great cultures of Latin America. It wasn't Evangelicals that tried to ban HucK Finn because it contained the "N" word.

Let me rephrase: I am an Evangelical: and I read banned books.

We've established that you are a different kettle of fish from your Evangelical brothers and sisters, right? So are the Evangelicals that live in sin next door to me, who drink, curse and cheated on their spouses and now the woman is a Cougar living with a much younger man. Nobody holds them up as the norm either.

Please don't group me with your neighbors. I have been cheated on; but have never cheated. And do some research; me and mine are closer to the historical norm. I'm much more like the Danbury Baptists than a whack job like Phelps.

It might change the context, but when I responded to Dave's quote, only the first line was there (the one referencing Billy Graham's writings as being Satanic). Having watched the Most Hated Family in America, I know this is something Phelps actually believes, hence my statement.

You've grouped yourself with my neighbors. You both claim to be Evangelicals. I have done research on Evangelicalism, at least the Southern mountain variety and there is plenty of fear of education within it and discouragement of their children becoming educated. There are some papers written on it if you want to do a search. In the area I lived in, the Evangelicals and fundamentalists were fond of calling people with an college education "educated idiots."

the Evangelical tradition goes back at least as far as the Anabaptists and we claim traditions the predate the Roman Church-but if want to limit yourself to "southern Mountain variety"- fine -but I guarantee the Graduates of Dallas Theological Seminary or Baptist Bible College or Wheaton Bible College or even Liberty University don't call people with an education-"educated idiots".

Nor does my Father (Ph.D in biochem) or my Mother (BA in Nutrition) or myself (Doctorate of Jurisprudence, BBA in Econ)-there is an anti-intellectual faction of evangelicals; but they don't represent me or mine.

Re: the term *evangelical*

It's interesting how the term 'evangelical' has changed (meaning the way people use the term has changed); it does not have the same meaning as 'fundamentalist' yet people use it as such.

When I think of 'evangelical' I think of the 18th century movement, which was a movement that desired to put heart back into worship. I especially think of John "do all the good you can, all the ways you can" Wesley

Many good things came from 18th century pietism (which, of course, I'll trace back to the Lutherans) Smile

still, Wesley always started with "you must be born again"; and then built from there.

I use evangelical as an umbrella term to cover anyone that believes that being "born again" is the starting place for personal Christianity: Pietists, charismatics, fundamentalists are all Evangelicals; IMHO.

I do too. If you do use it to cover all those things, you have to include all the Evangelicals that are anti-education and there are many. Yes, they mistrust even those people who go to an Evangelical college. What is it they call them, especially the seminaries? I think it is Christian cemeteries where Christianity goes to die.

The Amazing Grace Baptist Church, from what I've read, is not Evangelical though. From what I've read, they are over-the-top Calvinist. (It's a different theology.) Hardline Calvinists do not evangelize as there is no need to, from their perspective. On another note, their use of the name 'Baptist' is confusing, this is not a mainline Baptist church .... they are Independent, meaning they have no accountability, no history, no connections (iow, their ideas -- and cheap stunts -- are their own.)

excerpt:
The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, North Carolina plans to burn Bibles and books by Christian authors on Halloween. Pastor Marc Grizzard said that the King James Bible version is the only one his church follows. Grizzard said that all other versions, such as the Living Bible, are "satanic" and "perversions" of God's word. Grizzard and 14 members of the Church will burn music and books by Billy Graham and Rick Warren and other Christian authors. Grizzard blames these other authors because they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, and he considers that version to be infallible.
According to the Amazing Grace Baptist Church website, members will also burn “Satan’s music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul (and) oldies.”

I think they left out 'baroque' 'minimalist' 'be-bop' and 'opera' (Satan enjoys a good opera every now and again.)

Fundamental, Independent, Calvinist, King James thumpin crazies tis all they are; what more could one expect from such a group?

I think anyone who spreads the Good News is Evangelical. Not every denomination does. In any case, the Evangelical movement was always connected to Christian Socialism.

Not book burnings.
