if you graphed the range of a population along statistical lines-most would be inert neither doing good or evil-a few would be truly good and a few truly evil

but they would all fall into a bell curve

wrong, most would do a bit of good and a bit of evil from time to time. they would not be inert. (and inaction can also have good or bad consequences)

if they balance out good and bad that effectively makes them inert

I didn't think i had to spell it all out

and its not inaction we are speaking of but inconsequential existence

inert means 'unable to move', right? yet they do move, sometimes to the positive, sometimes to the negative. that's not the same as always standing inert in the middle.

no, inert means having no over all effect on the population or solution

inert: unable to move or act; inanimate; sluggish or lethargic;

you must have talked about another sort of inert then.

In chemistry, the term inert is used to describe something that is not chemically active. The noble gases were described as being inert because they did not react with the other elements or themselves.

yet that's not the first definition people think about when they hear the word 'inert'. except for chemists and their kids ...

Dave, you said the following in various posts:
Davelaw wrote:but even so, as we say in Texas some people need killing...
... more than horses need stealing
very few people matter; of those that matter: some are evil /some are good
and the remainder do all the work of the world
(Emphasis added)
Is that mindset the reason why Texans are so damn indifferent about whether the people they execute are actually guilty?

I don't think we are.. no one gets executed without one Jury trial and three appeals

with the advent of DNA, we are see the numbers drop as technology catches up to the time

but what you are really asking-is why does Texas and my county in particular opt for the death Penalty so much?

and I don't have a good answer

my not against the Death Penalty (for the worst of the worst)

I am against describing as the worst those who are not

What bothers me, Dave, is that someone like Dennis Rader is alive and well in prison and some 21-year-old kid is being strapped to a table and getting a lethal injection because he screwed up a robbery at a 7/11 and shot a clerk.

thats federalism: every state is different and has its own priorities

Texas also has more acquittals than any other State; because it has more trials

The death penalty is not about punishment. It's society being fed up enough that a person is deemed of no worth.

Not exactly, or more like equal parts

Karla Faye Tucker was said by many to have redeemed herself through her actions in prison. But was still deemed worthy of death by her initial actions.

And I am generally against the death penalty on principle, since sometimes I can't tell if it is about punishment or revenge moreso. The way I have heard some people practically cheer the executioners on sort of concerns me, although I very well might be cheering too if it were a family member or friend of mine that the prisoner killed. My ignorance here really is bliss, I guess.

You really don't want me to tell you what I've thought should be done to people who are cruel to animals...

Although, if the prison tour we took in my college criminology class is any indicator, putting someone to death might actually be *more merciful* than putting them in prison for life, amongst the general population...*shudder*

Tpaine. The only reason that Dennis Rader didn't get the death penalty is because at the time he committed his heinous crimes Kansas didn't have a death penalty law. Kansas didn't enact a death penalty law until the mid to late 90s. So he could only be punished according to the laws in effect at the time of his crimes. Which was life without parole.

BD, Most Evil is on id or Investigation Discovery which is found on channel 285 on DirecTV. I'm not sure if or where it would be on various cable systems. Most Evil also has a web site at: http://investigation.discovery.com/tv/most-evil/most-evil.html
