If animals wrote things down...

Post by wiscidea on Sun Apr 05, 2009 5:20 am

Hello.

I got this from the Gary Snyder book I just finished reading, but there's a link to the interview below the quote.

Caffeine Destiny: If animals wrote things down, who would you rather hear a poem by - a raccoon or a possum?

Gary Snyder:
A raccoon's poem is alert and inquisitive, and amazes you by what a mess it makes. A possum's poem seems sort of slow and dumb at first, but then it rolls over. When you get close to it, it spits in your eye.

http://www.caffeinedestiny.com/snyder.html

Here's the point(s) of this thread.

(1) Care to speculate about the nature of another animal's poetry?

(2) Care to demonstrate an animal's poetry?

Excellent idea for a thread!

I can't wait to see what others come up with.

Hmmm... I'll have to think about it too. Strange

Owl

Post by OmarKhayyam on Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:24 pm

The owl is solemn. His words slow careful deliberate. He has no time for foolishness. Life is serious business.

He writes in fixed meter, his rhymes are solid, no 'poet's license' for him. His words march forward as an army organized powerful full of majesty and purpose.

Squirrel

Post by OmarKhayyam on Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:33 pm

The squirrel is wordy almost random. He writes in free verse that rebels at the dictates of style. Yet he puzzles over life. Wonders at its purpose. Sees dangers everywhere yet refuses to be afraid. His words are choppy often out of order but on re-reading the meaning is there.

Cougar or Puma

Post by OmarKhayyam on Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:44 pm

The cougar produces little. His poems are short but full of meaning. He has style of his own, his rhymes often puzzling and seem out of place. Yet his words flow smoothly effortless. He is easy to read hard to understand. But taken as a whole his work has meaning. He sees much struggle in life and little comfort. He fears no one but is cautious with all.

The Tiger...

How 'bout...

The words are but a whisper or a shadow. You don't know whether you're reading the poem or the poem is reading you. And then, suddenly, a flash of Enlightenment, a revelation of Truth. The poem destroys your ego and you are one with the All.

I wish I could write something appropriate.

the cats kneads blissfully, eyes closed in ectasy. They curl up with they paws tucked to their chests or stand like china figurines as they contemplate the absurdities of thier human companions. They dream in free verse and purr in purrrfect iambic pentameters. They make haiku's about fishes and samll squeaking mice.

chasing blowing leaf,
cat leaps a joyful paw dance,
graceful tiger dreams.

Bear

Post by allthegoodnamesweretaken on Thu May 28, 2009 11:58 am

The bear is a creature of few words. He says what needs to be said, and not a word more. His poetry is deep, and full of meaning, and very often, not meant for eyes other than his own.

The whale writes in long meandering verse, very deep and penetrating points of sudden insight.

The snake writes in haiku and never means what he says.

The mouse writes in shy alliteration from a 6 mile view of the world. Often contemplative diatribes on life and death.

The ant writes with many voices.

Spider writes with alluring silken prose laden with seeming buds of wisdom which upon further study become traps of poison and death. The prose are spun individually with no two alike.

Tuna writes in canned humor.

Dog writes in simple rhyme and rhythm
as he slumbers and acts out his own dreams
To be a dingo, a coyote, a wolf would be fine.
He chomps his jaws, yelps, his sharp teeth gleam
Breathing, constant, first shallow, then heavy
Dog writes in simple rhyme and rhythm.

Re: If animals wrote things down...

We have a rescue dog named Lady, a mutt really we got from the county pound. She is part Shepard (maybe??) and (maybe??) some Lab but mostly she is just DOG. She is 2 now fully grown to 60 pounds and just loves to run, all out, ears flapping, for literally 1oo’s of yds, just for the love of running. I take her to the woods every now and again just so she can get her fill. She is an urban dog and has no hunting instinct at all. She regards all other creatures as playmates who love to run - or be chased – as much as she does. She has never encountered a land creature - man nor beast – she could not catch.

On that last trip to the woods (REAL woods Kentucky still has some) we were following a dry creek bed; blazing a trail as much as following one and I was hacking away with the machete and had stopped for a minute. Lady was ahead nose to the ground entranced by all those strange new smells. As I stood resting some movement on the ridge some 30 feet above caught my eye. There was a fawn barely more than a few months old spots still clearly visible staring down at man and dog. Lady seemed to sense the gaze and raised her head and saw the fawn. Their eyes locked for fully 20 seconds and neither moved. I am sure both had never seen the like before.

Finally the fawn, deciding discretion was the better part of valor turned and disappeared over the ridge. Lady, sensing a challenge I suppose, started up the incline paws digging for traction and disappear over the ridge. I was sure the fawn, at home and familiar with these woods would either out run or out smart Lady so I went back to my hacking. Some several minutes passed and then Lady appeared at the top of the ridge. She started down half falling half walking and came up to me. She looked up with the most puzzled expression in her eyes and then just lay down, tongue hanging out, panting. She didn’t get up even when I moved on and I finally when back to where she was still lying and gave her some water from my bottle. She lapped it up and slowly got to her feet. She then turned and faced the top of the ridge and - I swear – turned her hindquarters towards it lifted her leg and let go a good stream.

Oh, to have been able for read her thoughts.
