I live in the South and can assure you it isn't a Southern Jewish thing. Maybe it is a Texas Jewish thing?

I asked this question on a Christian site. They say that it no longer matters because Jesus forgives sins. However, I'm inquired as to the scripture that states that "past consequences of sins are no longer valid".

i don't about the consequences part... but, though your sins be as scarlet; they shall be washed as white as snow. As far as the east is from the west so shall be your sins: I will remember them no more. and NT

1Jo 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 ΒΆ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

It's a good thing that wasn't carried out. Not after all the times I cursed my father out. Both as a child & as a adult. Blow Up Evil Grin Whip
