From something I'm working on:

The Epitaph

I will leave with few regrets.
I picked the roads. I placed the bets.
My triumphs and disasters were my own.
I shared no credit and laid no blame
Sought no favors as I played the game.

Now the tears are shed the passion spent
The wine is drunk the muse content

There is little cause now to lament.
The work is done.
Those who follow can assess;
It matters not to me. I wish only rest.

And if a god asks why I paid it no heed
I will reply simply - I felt no need.
And if that answer does not suffice
That ego I will not feed.
I will neither bow my head nor bend my knee
Content that what will be will be.

Just for Fun

Post by OmarKhayyam on Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:42 am

There once was an old coot named Omar
But coots never get into boudoirs
So he became instead a geezer
For whom access is easier
And so made a mint from his memoirs Embarassed

I put that on Bcorner a few days ago. One of those spur of the moment things. Nothing serious - just fun. Smile

So you wanna be a critic?

How does this story line strike you?

In 2098 AD the unified field theory was perfected. Its application made travel to distant stars possible. During the next one hundred years, driven by curiosity and loneliness, Mankind hurled ships about the galaxy in an orgy of exploration and discovery. In the pressured frenzy of those years much knowledge was gained, and a price paid for it. Sometimes, a very dear price. This is the story of the price paid for some of that knowledge.

The story of how a group of humans were marooned on an alien civilized world and how they lost all contact with humanity. Of how a hybrid culture developed there and how the humans learned the comforting secret of that harmonious world.

And of how, after a thousand years, that hybrid culture and the descendants of those humans (so long ago forgotten) were found. Of how that finding lead to the destruction of those humans and the of the culture they had helped create. And how Mankind learned the revealing bitter truth of its own past on Earth.

And why Mankind, now sadder, but wiser, left forever the only alien civilization in the galaxy that, in its peculiar way, had welcomed him.

Off The Cuff (I)

Drinking coffee
in a coffee house, apropos
or just for show?
Cliche for sure

Suppose to be working
but I'd rather drink and write
oh no
the biscotti broke
sure to be gross.

Yggdrasil

Stood I to listen and meditate
As a tree he spoke
And thought I little fear of that
And let slip my bonds

Roots I felt
Sunk deep in living earth
Running waters, sleeping seeds
Unyielding stone beneath

But delved I deeper
Deeper in the secret darkness
Down below the dead three wells I found
Birth of rivers, well of wisdom, and of wyrd

Three ladies did regard me,
A youth, a matron and a crone
They laughed to see me
Ere the serpents struck

Deep my roots in worlds below
In times now lost to memory
Nidhoggs brood my roots assail
So much lost already

To the light my soul ascends
Through a trunk of sacred ash
Whispers in the bark all around
Secrets to be had.

Branches touch the stars themselves
Asgard, Alfheim too
To walk between the worlds a step
Well within my grasp

Pain I felt, and hunger too
Both terrible to see
I cast my eyes back to my trunk
And saw him watching me

Noose pulled hard about his neck,
Speared into the tree
One eye flashing as he hung
Sacrifice to me
I screamed to feel the spear in me
I shuddered as he laughed
The whispers of the bark did speak
Of secrets we might share

We danced and whirled and shouted loud
To the thunder of our blood
As we danced the tree filled me
And the hanger softly smiled

Oh no, limericks!!

There once was a tiger named TED
Who never got any in bed
But he never tried bars
Or flashy red cars
So his sex life was simply dead.

I don't like the nice ones. They're not kinky enough.

Meetings on the Way

Post by John T Mainer on Mon Apr 13, 2009 10:31 pm

Meetings on the Way

I met a man upon the road
Red of beard and bold of eye
Who taught me of the mad storm´s wrath
And boldly strode away

I met a man upon the road
One cold eye and face of stone
He told me I had far to go
And swiftly rode away

I met a woman on the road
Her face was kind and smile warm
She told me I had time to grow
Then set me on my way

I met a man upon the road
With laughing eyes and smile cold
He taught me how to lie and hide
When I looked he’d gone away

I met a man upon the road
One hand gone and striding bold
He taught me how to seek the right
And sent me on my way

I met a maid upon the road
With laughing eyes and hair of gold
She taught me love and laughter too
When I woke she’d gone away

I met a man upon the road
Whose keen eyes sought the hidden truth
He taught me how to stand the watch
And I knew this for my way

I met a man upon the road
His one eye flashed, his smile bold
He welcomed me to with him bide
And together we marched away

Peacekeeper

The press they called it murder
Orders called it peace
Where every side looked for the weak
And hunted them like beasts

We came past the reporters
Who stayed in their hotels
We marched out to the country
Where young men played at hell

We came here selling peace
But nobody would buy
They got so good at killing
They’d long forgotten why

They played at signing papers
And came to play at night
They buried them together
And laughed in their delight

Sometimes we would catch them
Orders told us no
Our guns they did the talking
Then the press became the foe

They sent soldiers to make speeches
They gave us blue berets
But we brought our little guns along
Because we sure do like to play

Nobody left happy
We took their game away
The press and politicians hate
That our guns carried the day

John T Mainer
For all CF, US Marine and Army, Royal Army, and other soldiers who wore the blue beanie and learned to play the game.

An Old Photograph

Poor photos, these gray images
Evidence of unskilled student work.
Seeing then now with practiced eye
I find them unworthy of display.

Yet the image captured lasts
Her youthful health and joy
Her impish smile the twinkling eyes
Trigger memories of times past.

Of slender fingers in my hair
And long walks down quiet streets
And long stops on secluded benches.
How is it, though decades pass
The passion stirs anew?

And then I see her fingers
Twisted and frozen now
Unable a button to undo
Or squeeze my hand just so.

There are no long walks now
Her legs too weak her gait too slow.
Even the smile is only half
She tries but the muscles refuse to go.

I look at the youthful photo
Then at the twisted slumped reality
And somehow the photo is what I see.
There in the chair.
As she was that spring day
So she seems now.

And the passion stirs anew.

Song
of the Hall

Here ye now for I’ll sing you true

Of fair halls of lore

Rich in learning

Warm in giving

Bright with laughter

Here ye now for I’ll sing you true

Of a queenly host

Of a dancers passion

Of a seeress learning

Of a weavers crafting

Dark the day for the hall is fallen

Grimoires hight

Fortress strong

Warm hearthed

Lore trove

Glory crowned

Dark the day for the hall is fallen

Grimoires glory

Word fame ringing

Best of lore halls

Too few its thanes

Too short its season

Here ye now for I’ll sing you true

In her hall I guested

At her feet my blade

In her hall my banner

Upon my wife her token

Upon my alter her runes

Here ye now for I’ll sing you true

Like a queen her faring

Raven tresses blowing

Wolf grin flashing

Purpose shining

Like the promise of spears
