Dave Ramsay?

Post by sacrificialgoddess on Sat Apr 18, 2009 10:45 am

Mind you, I am all for fiscal responsibility, but why is this guy so connected to Protestant Christian Churches? He seems to do his show in churches all over the place here, and just recently, one of the local baptist churches began advertising they were going to have some sort of webcast class of his available. Anyone got a clue?

I'm pretty much debt free already as I count debt free,,,,,

I have a mortgage and one car loan,,,,,

It's a mortgage I can afford, even if, God forbid, one of us lost our job. no credit card debt at all,,,,,,,

but heck, if I could get rid of the mortgage, lol, I wouldn't complain!

Know what you mean. One mortgage, one student loan.

They told me in the exit interview for the student loan that I had three options. I can pay it off. I can become permanently disabled. Or I can die.

Oh, I think my mother's church did a thing like this. But only the men were allowed to attend, since women shouldn't be paying the bills anyway.

Doesn't matter, really. He is pushing a GREAT program. We attended and because of it we will be out of all debt, except the big car and the mortgage and student loans, by 2011. We will be COMPLETELY debt free by 2012.
Just in time to pay for college.
He also pushes... charity. He says give 10% to charity. He is Christian, thanks God for helping him through the rough times and giving him and his wife the sense to figure out how to get out of debt. But he doesn't push religion.

To add to my original post: I don't think it was this one Dave Ramsay that my mother's church offered, it was a similar program though by some evangelist radio finance teacher but, not knowing him, I can't remember who it was.

How does that work with single, orphaned women? Who must pay their own bills.

Not their problem, is it? Rolling Eyes My mother made her husband go and take notes for her, since she pays the bills and is financially inept.

As she says, he's supposed to (it's Biblical!) but she has to do it since he's incapable. Maybe now that he's saved he'll start learning?

Some of these guys (don't know Dave) like Larry Burkett have strong evangelist followings.

Our faith has its own financial education program, http://www.4tprosperity.com/ . They offer them in our churches all over the county each year (they're not there, it's a person in the church who offers to do the facilitation). You tithe to the church during the course of it and if afterward you don't benefit the church refund your tithes.

It wasn't Dave Ramsay then. He sings his wife's praises and says he couldn't have done it without her.
I highly recommend anyone who wants to get out of debt, get his book, if you can't get to a seminar...
His seminars are 13 meetings long. We attended at an Episcopal Church in Huntington on Monday nights for 13 weeks.
We made friends, gave ideas, got ideas, and learned what he did to start over. The seminars are very good learning tools. But if you can't get to one, then get his book and/or cds. Truly helpful. I can't say enough good about him. He, literally, turned us around.
