Broke my streak.

Post by allthegoodnamesweretaken on Thu Jul 22, 2010 11:48 am

Well, the Gideon's came to my office today. Wanted to leave a bible in my waiting room. I said no. It was all I could do not to reply:

Hi, I'm allthegoodnamesweretaken, I represent the Ablimelech society, we go around and take the bibles out of the hotel rooms that you leave them in.

But I didn't. I have to keep personal and professional separate...

We, of course, have to keep the Bible @ both hotels, and in the Marriott we're required to have a book of Mormon in every room. Frankly, I think I'm more opposed to the latter than your average Bible.

We had a mailing from a Buddhist evangelistic society about 4 years ago, wanted to leave a book about the teachings of Buddha in each room and sent us a free copy (which I still have). Pretty thick, with almost see-through pages so a lot of text. I was all for it, but unfortunately corporate office makes that decision and there was no way we could accept.

I think I might be more open to having the teachings of the Buddha in my waiting room, but realistically, my office stays out of the religious and political sphere, so I couldn't be consistent and leave those out either.

I know I'm biased against Christianity, it's because, in short, I thing their are wrong.

Beyond that though, I'm not sure how someone could gain peace from reading that stuff. It's always seemed to be a pretty transparent missionary tactic to me. Just feeding off of a bias of hotel owners the other way.

I think you're smart to leave your opinions either way out of the office. That's the best plan. Unfortunately, someone decided years ago that the religion of hotels - like politicans - matters. So by default our industry is brought into it.

I have never, in my years, known of a single person to pick up or read the book of Mormon in their room. Had one person gripe about it.

I have, in a total of 5 years, known of approx. 10 people to utilize their Bible. By that, I mean they obviously were reading it and left it out, or commented on it, or in the case of one person called to say their room was missing one and they'd like it. (We have boxes of them, so when someone steals one, it gets replaced right away. Sorry.) These people were typically crazies. Of course, I'm not saying people who read the Bible are crazies --- however, the (sane) ones who do tend to read the Bible daily bring theirs with them from home for devotion. The crazies raid the room for Bibles.

Case in point: Last week, a nice (but seemingly off) family from GA stayed. We chit chatted, walked outside, picked veggies in the garden, etc. and they drove off. Then my housekeeper came running up - they keep their stacks of spare how-was-your-stay comment cards in the Bible --- because nobody ever looks in there. Well this family did, and wrote (at least 2 of them, if not the wife too) page after page after page of babbling rant about the porn options on TV. All the writing (different pens and penmanship, mind you) claimed to be from the father, who said how much they enjoyed us their stay the hotel etc. etc. but couldn't come back because there were porn options to buy on TV and if he hadn't been travelling with wife and kid he wouldn't have been able to keep himself from buying it, therefore betraying God wife Jesus etc... and I mean PAGES of the same thing, alternating between how nice we are and God and porn and Jesus and porn and the great beds and porn and Jesus and porn and the great price and porn... it was something you'd see in a psychological horror movie, or A Beautiful Mind. That's a prime example of a guest who utilizes the Gideon bible.

Oh, I know that if one is taken, it get's replaced right away. It's more the symbolism of the act of defiance, that the effect that the act will have.

I like your story. It seems the guy was a little hung up on porn. I bet if he didn't have his family with him, the room bill would have been different at the end of his stay....

I know! That's what he was saying. I CAN'T RESIST THE TEMPTATION over and over. I mean, normal Christian non-porn-dudes just...don't order it. haha. His problem was he couldn't NOT order it. I guess if you can't beat your demons, best to avoid the temptation alltogether.

I guess I did have the foresight to put this in the Christianity debate forum, so I can feel ok going off on this little rant, but....

I don't think that especially the popular versions of Christianity teach one how to beat their demons. It's more about trying to get other people to act in ways that they wouldn't perceive as offensive. It does nothing to teach the individual to function in a society in which they might get offended.

To me this is taking the easy way out, and the reason that we are seeing more(or at least they are louder) and more groups that are screaming about some of the actions of society.

It's rather unfortunate in that regard. They have access to a lot of people, and they do a lot of good in many ways (food pantries, etc) but the 'counseling' one receives in a vast many churches (ie, just talk to Jesus, he'l make it alright) doesn't really do a lot to help people through their problems. Least, not me, anyway. Wink

They hosted a Bible-based financial seminar at my mother's Baptist church last year, which she (ever so poor yet trying) wanted to attend. Oop, one problem - No women allowed. Women don't handle money - What on earth was she thinking? She tried to convince the elders it would really help them, but alas, no exceptions.

Well, and the good that they do accomplish, all seems short term. I can see the immediate effect of charity, like food pantries etc, but instead of getting people to rely on their own means, to accomplish their own goals, aren't you just giving people incentive to continue asking for help?

Just for the record, my wife handles the finances. She has a very analytical mind, and is good at it. I'm more intuitive, which translates into being impulsive.

Have you guys seen the commercial that is airing here in Oklahoma?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5nVussRzGs

Hmmmm... how many customers did he lose by sticking religion and politics into his commercial where it really didn't belong?

Considering where he's located, I think it's possible he'll gain a lot more than he loses.

Even in Wichita, the newspaper and yellow pages were rife with fish symbols in ads or phrases like "Bible-believing Christian Business." I hardly see either in ads in the STL metro, a few here and there but nowhere near as many.

Tennant is primo eye candy.

If yer talking nerds, I nominate the current doc, Matt Smith. I still can't get used to his excessive geekiness...and that friggin' bowtie looks stupid.

Matt Smith just doesn't do it for me. They should have picked someone else. He comes across as very effeminate and undoctorish. Don't get me started on that airhead Amy. And yes the bowtie is very stupid.

Two words: Peter Davies.

That doctor can take me for a ride in his Tardis any day!
